Graduation Year: 2008
Undergraduate Degree: BBA Finance, Mathematics minor
Current Organization: Mesirow Financial, Inc.
Job Title: Analyst, Public Finance
Describe to us your current job:
I am part of the middle-market municipal bond investment banking team at Mesirow Financial. My primary role is to provide analytical support to one of the senior bankers in the department. Our primary clients are small-to-medium size municipalities and school districts in the Midwest. Since 2010, I have been directly involved in the issuance of over $500 million of municipal bonds.
What positions did you hold previously?
From 2008-2011, I worked at H.J. Umbaugh & Associates where I served as an independent public finance advisor to state and local governments in Indiana and Michigan.
What is it like working in Finance?
I have a passion for mathematics and economics, so finance was an obvious field to enter because I am able to apply my knowledge on a daily basis to real-world problems. I like public finance in particular because my work benefits local communities and taxpayers. Each of our clients faces unique fiscal challenges and each engagement is different and intellectually stimulating.
Investment banking is a very competitive field and if you’re not challenging yourself, you won’t be in the business for long. I’ve definitely learned so much more working in the industry than I ever did at school!
Do you have any favorite hobbies?
I really enjoy road biking and recently participated in the annual Apple Cider Century ride in Three Oaks, Michigan. Southwest Michigan’s wine country, and especially Berrien County, is a great place to ride.
What did you enjoy about Andrews University School of Business Administration?
Access to many great teachers. In particular, I am very grateful to Dr. Alan Kirkpatrick and Dr. David Beckworth, now an assistant professor of economics at Western Kentucky University. They were not just good teachers, but also great mentors.
What would you say were your major achievements while a student at Andrews University?
Completing my courses in 4 years and avoiding more student loans!
Any tips for students searching for their first job in Finance?
Do some research and make sure you choose an academic program with a solid job placement ratio for graduates in your area of interest. Complete at least 1, and preferably 2 internships before you graduate. The experience will help you zero in on what type of finance you actually want to do. Internships are incredibly effective as a stepping stone into a permanent position and will help you begin developing a professional network of friends. Even if you choose to work somewhere other than where you interned, the experience will look great on your resume and give you confidence.
Understand that if you want to land a good job, the task is up to you. Application deadlines for internships end much earlier than you might think!
